Gloria Petyarre refers to her work as Awalye, a reference to the body paint used in the sacred ceremonies of her Anungara country. Her pictures are made up of thousands of beautiful, many-coloured dabs or short strokes in subtle hues, swirling over the canvas, or great circular bands of overlapping colour.
